How To Organize an RV Basement

If you think you can't accumulate (and misplace) a lot of "stuff" in a space as contained as an RV, think again. 2013 marked our 10th year of full-timing, and we still can't always remember where we've stashed things, especially in the basement.

If you have the same problem we sometimes do, locating the wide variety of things you keep squirreled away in your RV, a selection plastic bins in various shapes and sizes can help a lot. They're typically made by companies like Rubbermaid or Sterilite and available at just about any Wal-Mart.

Bins not only keep things organized, but they keep liquids contained in the event of a leak. We also label each bin with the contents, making it easy to find just about anything, especially those rarely-used items that we haven't seen in years.

Here are a few quick & easy ideas for making your RV's storage area a little more user-friendly.

We don't pretend to be experts on any particular RV topic, and mostly know about maintaining our own rig. But many systems are the same on different RVs. The advice we give works well for us, but be sure to consult a professional technician if you're unsure about working on your own RV.

  1. This is a great article and video but most with trailers do not have those great ( and expensive) slide-out trays that are in some motor homes like this one, so most in trailers weather tag or 5th wheel have some type of base storage and they either just pack it till there is no more room or some like me use bins like you have in your trays, but I have found over the years that the "sterilite" containers break way to easy, their type of plastic seems brittle, so I like the type that most in warehousing call TOTES and they have a permanent flip top and they last much longer and are made to stack so take a look at this link and then do your own shopping http://www.homedepot.com/p/Unbranded-12-gallon-Heavy-Duty-Storage-Tote-DC-10-650-81-00/202534505?N=c36j#.UokcpPOA3cs

    1. You're right about that... most RVs don't have slide-out trays (our first RV didn't), so each layout will need to be adjusted for accordingly. The bins from Home Depot look super sturdy, so thanks for the link, but one thing we do like about ours is that they're translucent, so it makes it easier to get a feel for what's in them at a glance. Since ours are laid out in a wide, low arrangement, there's no issue with weight, since they aren't stacked. A taller space, where bins are stacked on top of each other, would definitely benefit from more heavy-duty bins. Thanks for the input!
